Folktale Lamps, 2016

Prospect Hill Academy Charter School

This project was with a classroom of ninth and tenth graders, all of whom were immigrants, or children of immigrants. They were asked to choose a folktale or story from their family’s country of origin and break it down into a series of iconographic elements. These were each sculpted in clay, glazed and then stacked, totem style to tell their story. The pieces were supported by a hollow rod, which allowed for electrical wiring to run from the base, up through the top of the piece. The totems became lamps! After a wonderful gallery exhibit, the lamps went home with the students.
