My interest in clay has always been very sculptural. I love to accentuate the plastic nature of clay. While well crafted, my work is never polished. I really like the sense of my touch to remain as part of each finished piece. My tile paintings incorporate all these ideas as the images are carved and shaped out of thick slabs of clay.
Ceramics, and especially tile, is laden with process. I try to bring each step alive by having all the decisions I make along the way have their effect on the final piece. The paintings begin with my choice of dark brown, almost black clay, to my choice of image, and the way it is revealed by carving and then again as it is cut apart for both structural and esthetic reasons. Next come the choices of glaze and grout colors. Each step adds a new layer and requires additional thought as the work is completed.

We came to Somerville Open Studios and loved your work. I am interested in a lamp if it is still available and wanted to get dimensions. It had a finial which matched the cascading, listing stacked base (I hope I am describing it OK–it was a greenish-blue).
    Thank you

      Hi Deb,
Thank you for your nice words, and yes, I believe I still have the lamp you are referring to. It is 31″ from the table to the top of the finial and 12″ in diameter at its widest point.
I am in the studio most days and would be happy for you to come by. I am also having another open studio event December 7 & 8, 14 & 15.
please give me a call, thanks, Julie 617-666-3134
