This project was designed to introduce students to the wonders, as well as current concerns, of the ocean’s coral reefs. We looked specifically at Caribbean coral reefs because many students in the class have family connections to the Caribbean. The students learned many hand-building and mosaic techniques, practicing on several small personal pieces, prior to launching into creating the mural. We began with each student choosing five animals, native to the reefs, they wanted to create in clay. When the animals were complete, the students worked collaboratively to sculpt the coral reef and mosaic a series of waves. All the pieces came together as one beautiful mural, gracing the hallway of the science classrooms.
